Graphic Design: Places & Scale

This is an on-going documentation of where graphic design is used in different places and on different scales.

This is the album sleeve and CD for a Swedish metalcore band called Cedron, called Watching The Sun Turn Pitch Black. The cover and CD were designed by Jonas Valtysson who said 'The front cover is based on the album title... We liked the idea of an alien like black life-form hovering in a barren landscape.' The reason I like this piece of graphic design is because of the clever photo editing, but also how the image itself is not simple, yet the layout and overall feel of the album sleeve is. Even with the photo there is a good use of negative space, emphasizing the text. With album titles there is a lot of scope to experiment and play which can produce some poor and unprofessional work, however, I believe this is a well produced album cover.

This is some packaging design for and alternative mug. The way the packaging has been designed is to not cover the whole mug but leave visible the alternative handle. The typography and imagery is very simple, only consisting of the name, logo, some small illustrations and information. By printing it on the box - without a finish - creates a more natural feel, whilst also drawing the focus to the handle protruding from it.

A poster and program for an art exhibition called Lost is Found. The reason i chose to blog this is shows how one image, text and layout has been used in two different places. There is very little changed between the poster and the program. The poster has a little bit more information on it whilst the program is simplified down to the fundamentals.

A clever and witty design for the side of a bus to advertise the local zoo. This shows how graphic design can be used on a larger scale to inform the general public. The placement of the text is prominent so that it is not missed due to the very creative visual aesthetic. There is also a clever use of negative space - painting it black, almost completely removing it and making it seem that the snake is actually crushing the bus.
