OUGD406 - End of Module Self-Evaluation

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN                                                      LEVEL 04
Module Code         OUGH406
Module Title            Design Practice 1

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME:                       Jasper Lee

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Through this module the skills that I believe I have developed the most are my productivity on and use of InDesign, my practical skills – in terms of the manufacture and binding of booklets. My ability on InDesign has been applied throughout this module, especially in Speaking From Experience where I used it to layout and create an entire booklet. As with my InDesign ability, my practical skills have best been shown in the Speaking From Experience brief. It can be seen in how the booklet has been put together, changed and adapted so that it functions properly.

What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I think the most developed design approach is, again, my use of layout and hierarchy. I have taken the techniques and skills learned in OUGD404 and applied them and experimented with them throughout this module. My use and experimentation with layout can specifically be seen in the InDesign Animal Layout brief and the Speaking From Experience brief.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how/will you capitalize on these?

The main strengths that I can identify in my work are the production methods, my use of layout and hierarchy and the quality of my content. I will capitalize on these features by continuing to use them in other briefs and other modules, whilst also using them to improve areas of my designing that is not as good.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

The 2 main weaknesses that I can identify are a lack of thumbnail sketches and development work for some of the briefs, specifically the InDesign Animal Layout brief, and again, time management. Although I have not ran out of time I left a lot of it to the last minute instead of exploiting the time I had, such as Easter. The lack of good time management meant that I could not produce as many of my final Speaking From Experience outcomes as I would have ideally liked to. As well as time management with physical designing, my time management of my blogging could also be improved. I still need to blog more regularly; little and often, so I do not have it hanging over me at the end of briefs.

Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1.    Blog the night or the day that I do the work or gather research so that the content, method and information is fresh in my head.
By doing this I would/will become more organized, produce better quality work as I have more time and keep on top of work better than I have done.
2.    Organize print slots and screen-printing well in advance so that I have time to complete what I would like to rather than just the required amount.
From this I would/will gain more personal fulfillment of the brief as well as a slightly less stressful run in to the end of module submission.
3.    Utilse the facilities and resources available more, whether that is more time in the studio or experimenting with screen-printing and binding techniques, just do more.
This would/will give me more variation to my work whilst also learning and improving a variety of different skills.
4.    Produce more thumbnails and development sketches to show my thinking, changes and adaptations made to the work and why I decided to go with the design I did.
This will give me a greater variety of design work so that I have more freedom to experiment and a greater foundation to work from.
5.    The final thing that I would do if I did it again would be to screenshot all of the time, as I often make digital amendments without noting them down or showing what I’ve done and my reason behind it.
This will enable me to show all of the work I do digitally before the final outcome it finished, allowing me to keep track of what I have done and show people the reason I have done it.

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self-evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
